The Boomerang Alliance Plastic Free Places program is now active in Cairns, Townsville, Byron, Adelaide and Perth. We have also completed a number of smaller pilot projects in Elsternwick and Mt Martha.
With many governments now looking to reduce single use plastics, the PFP program is an ideal way to engage the hospitality and events sectors in switching away from problem takeaway plastics.
Whilst COVID-19 restrictions have hampered progress, it is quite clear that many in the industry want to get rid of their problem plastics. To help them, the Plastic Free Places program released a number of guides to encourage both reusable or, when not possible, 100% compostable food ware options. These can be found at www.plasticfreeplaces.org
As restrictions have eased, Victoria excepted, we have found renewed interest by cafes in signing up to the program and making the switch. In Cairns, for instance, over 30 cafes joined up, just in July.
