Cut the Wrap

Boomerang Alliance Newsletter - June 2018

Our campaign against excessive plastic packaging, Cut The Wrap is already in motion with successful Facebook initiative, Snap Back and continuing with forthcoming forum in association with Bloomberg, The Future of Packaging - Driving Change for Consumer Packaged Goods.

Australian plastic packaging consumption figures are on the rise.

According to the National Recycling and Recovery Survey 2015–16 by the Australian Packaging Covenant [APCO], the country consumed an approximated 844,300 tonnes of plastic packaging. Based on ABS population figures for the same period - 24,127,200 - plastic packaging consumption for every Australian averages at approx 35 kgs per year.

That’s weight of a child.

Coinciding with the Frydenberg administration's commitment that 100 per cent of packaging will be "recyclable, compostable or reusable" by 2025 as part of an effort to fix the nation's waste crisis, Boomerang Alliance kicked off our plastic packaging campaign Cut The Wrap with Facebook initiative Snap Back in early May.

Devised to grant power to the consumer, the focus of the competition was to shine the spotlight on manufacturers and retailers guilty of excessive plastic packaging offenses.

With a quick snap uploaded to our specially constructed competition page on Facebook, entrants could name and shame the offenders while being in with the chance to win a reusable coffee cup from JOCO Cup.

The photos produced from the successful campaign will go on to play a central role in BA's forthcoming forum, The Future of Plastic Packaging - Driving Change for Consumer Packaged Goods. In association with Bloomberg, the assembly will bring together key figures from the retail and manufacturing industries together with experts in sustainability.
