Cans For Creativity Not For Our Coast

Every minute 21,000 bottles and cans are littered or land-filled in Australia. Not only does this place unnecessary pressure on finite resources, a lot of it ends up in our oceans where it has disastrous effects on marine wildlife and birds.

The Boomerang Alliance is campaigning for a national container for Queensland. Cash for Containers involves the charging of a 10-cent deposit on beverage bottles and cans, with the deposit refunded upon return. It operates in over 40 places around the world, including South Australia. Evidence shows it slashes litter rates, increases recycling, creates jobs and boosts community fundraising. Apart from being the most effective way to reduce container litter, it also has the added advantage of providing a massive financial boost to community organisations interested in collecting cans and bottles. The Boomerang Alliance estimates the scheme could provide over $25 million to community organisations every year.

Cans for Creativity, Not for Our Coast is an event that highlights the scope of the can and plastic problem, while encouraging people to get creative with their waste by upcycling their empty containers, as we invite participants to use (clean) empty cans and plastic bottles to create a beach sculpture.

The Boomerang Alliance will provide all the materials, plastic bottles and cans only (no glass) and there will be a prize on the day for the best sculpture. All ages are welcome, this is a family friendly event. Come along and get creative for the environment!

Bottles and cans used for this event will be removed and recycled.
